Man’s Best Friend : A tribute to Riley Jr. (RJ) our golden pup

Today feels heavy. The weight of our Dog’s passing has placed a burden on my heart that I am not sure how to navigate quite yet.
Part of the weight comes from me navigating this unknown. The unknown of how to walk through this grief with my sons. I’m called as a father to protect and guide, yet in this moment I have few words to ease the hurt of knowing their first companion won’t be coming back through our doors.
The Mesolithic age timeline suggests we humans discovered a dog’s magic over 130,000 years back. Dogs made us better. In every way.
From Wolves…to man’s best friend.
This transformation from wild to domesticated household companion is one of the best things to ever happen to humankind.
Their loyalty knows no limit.
Their support is unwavering.
Their presence brings warm and calm.
Their generous and selfless sharing of joy is abundant.
Their unconditional love radiates.
Their unspoken intuition and belief in us is ever present.
“A Dog’s Purpose” by W. Bruce Cameron reminds us :
“Whenever possible, find someone to save, and save them.”
“Lick the ones you love.”
“Find your purpose-you are needed again and again.”
RJ,
You saved us. All of us.
Your gentle spirit and protective love wrapped around our family like a shield.
You shared your affection and kisses freely with us, and anyone who would enter our world. You had a way of welcoming people that was undeniable and unforgettable. (Mostly because of the amount of white hair you would leave on clothes as they came and went) but a beautiful white coat for sure.
You fulfilled your purpose in this life 1000 times over with our family, and through your way of living with joy, loyalty, and endless devotion, you gave us purpose too.
Thank you for sharing your smile.
Thank you for sharing your excitement for life.
Thank you for your nightly snuggles and comfort you gave without needing any words.
You were everything we could ever wish for in a best friend.
The lessons you left behind (about love, presence, living in the moment with an open heart) will stay with us forever. My wife, my sons, and I are all better, more loving people because we knew you and shared this part of life’s journey with you.
Run free, sweet Riley Jr. You will always be a part of our family.
Jonathan
